The Wines…
Gambero Rosso is an Italian food and wine magazine and publishing group founded in 1986.. Its name literally translates as “red prawn” and comes from a tavern in Pinocchio where the Fox and the Cat dine. It considered one of Italy’s top wine publications. It reviews tens of thousands of wine each year throughout Italy with less than 5% receiving a three glass or Tre Bicchieri top rating
The Gambero Rosso wine ratings in Vini d’Italia are built up on the number of glasses “bicchieri” awarded to a wine, which is indicated in the wine guide with a number of stylized glasses next to the wine’s name. Only 5% of the wines rated receive the highest rating three glasses or “Tre Bicchieri” award , and the wine guide only includes wines which are seen by the editors as “above average”. The ratings are based upon blind tasting by independent experts. The guide is edited in Italian, English and German language. Three glasses indicate “extraordinary wines”.
With the help of our longtime friend Robert Fatica we have been able to secure eleven Tre Bicchieri wines. Robert spoke to us about having a wine dinner to feature these beautiful Italian wines and we said YES!
Robert owned Primo Vino in Cleveland’s Little Italy for over 35 years and each year he would host a Tre Bicchieri wine event at his restaurant. Robert closed Primo Vino several years ago and now sells the Italian wine he so loves for Wines LLC. Robert has traveled extensively throughout Italy and will be a perfect guide for this tasting.
As mentioned the dinner will feature eleven Tre Bicchieri wines matched with a six-course dinner from Chef John D’Amico.
Francicorta “Brut” Teatro alla Scala, Bellavista,
Lombardy, Italy, 2016
The Bellavista Franciacorta Teatro alla Scala Brut is a classic style, with sweet notes of ripe white-fleshed fruit from the hilltops. hints of white almonds and pastry, candied citrus fruit and fresh white horn and elderberry blossom. Elegant yet powerful attack, associated with exuberant, dynamic and harmonious freshness. complex, multifaceted, supple texture, with a distinctively expressive verticality and energy.
Etna Bianco, “Cavanera Ripa di Scorciavacca” Firriato,
Sicily, Italy, 2021
60% Carricante, 40% Catarratto. Straw-yellow in color with greenish highlights. Powerful nose with distinct floral notes that accentuate the fruity nuances of white peaches and pears. Rich texture with a persistent freshness and a lengthy finish.
Sauvignon Bianco, Volpe Pasini, Venezia Giulia IGT,
Northern Italyy 2021
Powerful Sauvignon with fresh aromas of melon and lime blossom on the nose and palate.
Vintage “Tunina”, Silvio Jermann,
Alto-Adige, Italy, 2019
Vintage Tunina is bright straw-colored with golden reflections. The nose is intense, wide, very elegant and persistent with scents of honey and country flowers. To the palate it is dry, soft, well balanced with an extraordinary persistence due to its full body. It matches with first courses with truffles with fish dishes and poultry. It is a great match with fresh salmon stuffed with parmesan cheese and artichokes. A field blend.
Barolo “Ceretta”, Garesio,
Serralunga·Piedmont, Italy, 2015
A ‘masterpiece’ is how our friend, one of London’s top sommeliers, who is one the ‘Barolo Boys’, describes the ‘Cerretta’. I completely go along with that. It feels so Grand Cru – like the finest Burgundy, Barolo or Brunello – in the way it just floats, with finesse, and elegance and grace. It’s just there in its beauty. It needs no make up.
Barbera d’Asti Sup. La Luna e i Falo, Vite Colte,
Piedmont, Italy, 2019
The wine then matures for about 12 months in small oak, about 1/3 new; here, the wine, already impressively structured, acquires a multi-layered depth of flavour and character, evolving into a richly-nuanced barbera of grace and expressiveness. 100% Barbera d’Asti
Super Tuscan “Petra”, Petra,
Tuscany, Italy, 2019
On the palate, the wine is soft and full-bodied, at times vibrant, and fills the palate with its dense and elegant tannic texture that closes in a persistent and beautifully crisp finish. It presents itself as an ac- accessible wine in youth and, at the same time, a wine with great ageing potential, destined to be appreciated more over the years. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.
Toscano “Ripa delle More”, Castello Vicchiomaggio,
Tuscany, Italy, 2018
Bright blueberry and strawberry aromas and flavors, full body , delicate tannins and fresh clean finish. A blend of 60% Sangiovese 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.
Chianti Classico “Riserva”, Nitardi,
Tuscany, Italy, 2018
Medium palate with elegant tannins and balanced acidity. Outstanding texture, remarkable softness with a long & persisting finish. A blend of 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot,
Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, Allegrini,
Veneto, Itlay, 2017
Very rich black fruit on the nose with a ground-base of blackcurrants, tainted with notes of prunes and dates. Smoky-spice notes add complexity. Full-bodied with intense, exotic black-fruit flavors, just as on the nose. Firm tannins and good acidity complete the picture. Drinkable even now, but best from 2023, when the tannins will be softer. A blend of 45% Corvina Veronese, 45% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano “Silineo”, Fattoria del Cerro,
Tuscany, 2019
This wine is 90% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and 10% Mammolo sourced from vines 16-26 years of age. Fermentation is in Stainless and steel tanks over 12 days. The wine aged 12 months, 6 months in barrels and 6 months stainless steel. Wine Enthusiast Magazine said “Cedar, mocha and baking spice aromas lead the nose. The straightforward palate offers ripe black plum, espresso and toasted hazelnut alongside close-grained tannins. Drink through 2025.”
Vi de Visciola “Cherry” Fortified Wine, Collefrisio,
Marché, Italy, NV
Fresh wild cherry aromas and flavors, sweet but offers great acidity. Well-balanced with a great finish.
